Whidbey Island Naval Air Station to demolish 69 buildings
Officials at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington plan to raze 69 buildings that range from tiny toilet facilities to the historic Hangar One built in 1945. All the buildings are located on either Ault Field Base or on the Seaplane Base. U.S. Navy officials in charge of the proposal have agreed to preserve the historical significance of the buildings with a 3D model, an oral history record, an informational Web site and the preservation of part of the wood-framed, bowstring truss-roof.
Moving or re-purposing the buildings for new use was considered, but no workable solutions were found. The buildings would require costly asbestos cleanup and renovation before any re-purposing could be considered.
