Detroit demolition blitz halted by the Department of Natural Resources
State officials from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources stepped in Friday to put a stop to a city project to demolish raze 3,000 structures this year, citing that the city did not file the proper paperwork or comply with EPA regulations to test for asbestos before beginning the demolition.
Neighbors are concerned that the dust created by the demolition process might make them sick. So far, 60 houses have been torn down, but state officials only heard of the effort through the media. City officials stated that it’s probably just a paperwork error, adding that the buildings already razed were unsafe structures, which can be torn down without filing.
