Widow of U.S. Navy mesothelioma victim urges asbestos vigilance
Judy Whitmire of Valencia, California lost her husband Carl to an asbestos-related disease in 2002. Carl had served with the U.S. Navy, which used asbestos in its ships for many years. Asbestos was known for its insulating and fireproofing properties, so it was used throughout ships around the world.
Whitmire urges people to be vigilant about asbestos exposure, pointing out that there are more than 10 different diseases and conditions that are directly attributable to asbestos exposure, one of which is mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that strikes men more often than woman.
She tells people to monitor their environment for any products that may contain asbestos. Many older homes and buildings contain asbestos. The debris from the World Trade Center contained asbestos and other dangerous chemicals. Whitmire wants everyone to keep putting pressure on their elected officials to ban the import and domestic manufacturing of all asbestos-containing products.
