Baucus hosted groundbreaking ceremony for Libby asbestos center
Senator Max Baucus hosted a public groundbreaking ceremony on March 31 for the renovation and expansion of the Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) in Libby, Montana. The ceremony began at 1:30 p.m. and was followed by a reception and an opportunity to take a tour of the clinic.
The Center for Asbestos Related Disease is a nonprofit facility dedicated to health care and research to benefit the people of Libby who have been impacted by asbestos exposure. It gets about 20 to 25 new patients each month. The expansion will add a new pulmonary function testing laboratory and new patient rooms.
A health emergency was declared in Libby due to the high incidence of mesothelioma and other respiratory diseases caused by asbestos from the now-defunct W.R. Grace vermiculite mine.
