Alexander Inn must take care of asbestos, other code violations
The historic Alexander Inn in Oak Ridge, Tennessee was purchased by the Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort (ORRE) last December. Under an agreement with the city, ORRE has until the end of the year to pay for the building. A lot of work must be done to the building, and the east wing has been secured so that no one can enter it.
There are a number of code violations that need to be addressed, as discussed at a hearing in Oak Ridge City Court at the end of March. ORRE will be removing furnishing and fixtures, then conducting an assessment of hazardous materials like asbestos that have to be remediated.
Formerly known as the Guest House, the Alexander Inn was built in 1943. It housed many dignitaries throughout the course of the Manhattan Project in World War II. The hotel was named an endangered historic building by the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance in early March.
