Texas painter awarded substantial sum in mesothelioma lawsuit

Vernon Walker of Dallas, Texas was a career painter who painted everything from single-family homes to strip malls to skyscrapers. He is also a mesothelioma patient. Mesothelioma is a rare but serious form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Walker was exposed to asbestos during his work when he came into contact with drywall compounds, block fillers and texturing paints. Some of these products were banned in 1978 by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) for being unreasonably dangerous.

Walker and his wife won a lawsuit against mining company Union Carbide Corporation and product manufacturers Kelly Moore, Bondex and Georgia Pacific for mining the asbestos and manufacturing the products that made him sick. The couple was represented by Baron & Budd, P.C., and they were awarded a substantial sum by the jury, although most of the manufacturers had chosen to settle during the course of the trial, and Bondex was the only remaining defendant by the time the jury reached its verdict.
