Four more mesothelioma patients for Iron Range study
The Minnesota Department of Health has discovered mesothelioma in four more individuals, thanks to a review by the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System as part of the University of Minnesota’s study of Iron Range taconite workers. Including these four workers, 63 cases of mesothelioma have been diagnosed so far as a part of this study.
Mesothelioma is a rare but serious form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Workers were exposed to the toxic substance asbestos in the taconite mines. Health officials believe they will find even more cases of mesothelioma as the study continues, since it can take decades before mesothelioma symptoms develop.
