Early mesothelioma diagnosis could help
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that targets the mesothelium, the lining surrounding the lungs and other internal organs. Many people have still never heard of the disease, although it can be devastating to the families affected. The most common form of the disease is pleural mesothelioma, which targets the lining covering the lungs.
According to the American Cancer Society, between 2,000 and 3,000 Americans are given a mesothelioma diagnosis each year. It is caused by asbestos exposure, and symptoms may not develop for decades following initial exposure. Smokers face a much higher risk of contracting mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer that often is not diagnosed until it is advanced. Early diagnosis may help patients who can then receive mesothelioma treatment – like chemotherapy, surgery or radiation – at a much earlier stage.
