Asbestos abatement wraps up in April at Parsons Paper Mill
In August of 2008, a 14-year-old boy burned the Parsons Paper Mill in Holyoke, Massachusetts nearly to the ground, leaving the 313,000-square-foot property in smoking ruins. The Environmental Protection Agency took over cleanup of the property in March 2009, and has since removed some 327 tons of debris, including hazardous asbestos waste material from shingles, caulking and insulation. The federal government footed the $1.8 million cleanup bill, and will pursue the bankrupt site owner, National Vulcanized Fiber Co., for reimbursement. The cleanup is expected to wrap up this week, and no plans have been discussed to date about the future of the site.
