EPA has issued compliance order to Kansas Department of Corrections

The Topeka Correctional Facility in Kansas has been ordered to comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for asbestos abatement at one of its prison renovation projects. The prison has not been fined, but the EPA notice states that all asbestos removal must be done using specially trained workers, proper supervision, and protective clothing, and the asbestos waste must be disposed of properly according to EPA procedures.

The order also states that the prison must conduct an inspection for asbestos before commencing renovation, which they have been faulted for ignoring before. Roger Werholtz, the Kansas Secretary of Corrections issued a statement that the department has already taken steps to comply with the EPA order and will conduct all future renovation projects within EPA guidelines.
