Tennessee man sentenced to house arrest for asbestos violations
Gary Fillers of Chattanooga, Tennessee was charged with violating the federal Clean Air Act during an asbestos removal project called the Watkins Street Project. He pleaded guilty to improperly stripping, bagging and removing asbestos from the property for a year, which led to a sentence of six months under house arrest and three years probation. Three others were also charged in the case, but they pleaded not guilty, and the status of their cases was unknown at the time of this writing.
Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials for many years before its health risks became widely known. Its handling and removal is strictly regulated to protect workers and the public from the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.
