EPA conducting demolition at Nevada mine
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) started removing a tire pile and demolishing an administrative building at the Yerington/Anaconda mine site in Nevada in April. The work was expected to be completed within a month.
Asbestos-containing materials were found throughout the Mine Office Building last fall. The EPA hired an asbestos abatement contractor to take care of the contamination before demolition could begin. Because the building was more than 50 years old, the EPA had to hire an archaeologist to determine potential historical significance in order to comply with the National Historic Preservation Act. The EPA managed site security and dust control to protect the public from any health risks associated with the removal projects.
