Approved FAA funding will help demolish old Air Force alert facility
The Clinton County legislature has approved $420,000 of funding from New York State and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to demolish the old alert facility at the site of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base. The base was built in the 1950s and closed in 1995. Contaminated with mold, asbestos and other toxic chemicals, the demolition project ballooned above its estimated $1 million price tag.
With the additional funding approved, the hazardous substance remediation can go forward. Then the alert facility can come down to make way for further development at Plattsburgh International Airport. One county legislator would like to see a hotel on the property.
Whatever development takes place once the demolition is finished, it will be something that generates tax revenue. Demolition is expected to last from late April until late June.
