ECSU theater and library undergo asbestos removal

Asbestos removal began at Elizabeth City State University (ESCU) in North Carolina in February. Clean Air Environmental was hired as the contractor for the job. The asbestos removal is expected to be finished at the G.R. Little Theatre and two wings of the G.R. Little Library by mid-April. The project was undertaken to make possible the installation of energy-saving equipment, including new lighting fixtures and a new HVAC unit.

For much of the last century, asbestos was commonly used in building materials because of its usefulness in fireproofing and insulation. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), asbestos fibers can become airborne when asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed by demolition, repairs, or remodeling projects. Inhaling asbestos fibers can result in serious medical problems like lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
