Future Calamityville site will require expensive environmental cleanup

The former Cemex cement plant in Ohio is slated to become the future site of Calamityville, Wright State University’s disaster response training center. Extensive environmental remediation, however, must be completed before the university can see its plan through to fruition. Asbestos and an organic industrial solvent called trichloroethene (TCE) are among the hazardous substances that must be abated.

The city of Fairborn took ownership of the 54-acre property in June 2009 when it won $3 million in grants for the cleanup. When the remediation is complete, the city will be donating the land to the university. Calamityville is expected to inject $75 million into the local economy annually.

While the remediation is underway, Wright State University signed a five-year lease with the city that includes the option to take ownership of the property.
