Mesothelioma risk abated by asbestos removal at North Carolina high school

Southern Alamance High School in North Carolina recently completed asbestos removal in the band room. A ceiling leak discovered in January necessitated the removal and replacement of ceiling tiles in the band room. After the ceiling tiles were replaced, there were still complaints about an odor in the room, which resulted in the decision to replace the carpet.

When the carpet was pulled up, asbestos was discovered, and the area was closed off to staff and students. An asbestos contractor was hired to complete the abatement work over the weekend, beginning on a Friday evening after students had left for the day. The band room had been inspected and cleared for re-occupancy by the time classes resumed that Monday.
