$41.5 million approved for new VA trauma center and hospital improvements

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded a total of $41.5 million to improve existing hospital wards at Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center and to build a polytrauma center to take care of Iraq veterans and Afghanistan veterans who were injured by roadside bombs and other explosive devices.

The $4.3 million contract to upgrade and expand Ward 4-A at Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center was awarded to Strategic Perspectives Development of Texas. The work will include asbestos abatement and upgrades to the utilities, telephone and data systems, electrical systems and fire alarm and fire protection systems.

The $37.2 million contract was awarded to Robins and Morton to build the new three-story polytrauma center that will treat veterans with multiple life-threatening medical problems. The center will provide physical medicine, prosthetic services and rehabilitation services to wounded combat veterans. It will also serve as a research facility.
