Elementary school demolition up to the voters

The Butterfield Building, a school district building that has been used as an office complex and an elementary school in New York, may soon be demolished. The building has been vacant for three years and has several safety issues that the school district believes makes it a liability. Because of the numerous problems, such as asbestos, the demolition bids have been over half a million dollars. The district has the money to complete the work, and the project would not cost taxpayers any additional money. If the building is demolished, the Watertown City School District is considering installing athletic fields or possibly a new elementary school, should the district begin seeing a greater influx of students.
