Memorial Coliseum demolition cheaper than renovations

The City Council in Corpus Christi, Texas has decided to tear down Memorial Coliseum. The lowest bidder for the demolition came up with a cost estimate of $583,303. An engineering firm estimates that it would cost nearly $4 million ($3.7 million for the renovations plus another $200,000 in city costs) to keep the coliseum’s roof and turn it into an open air pavilion – more than four times the cost of the demolition. The open-air pavilion was suggested by a local architect, but it was not considered financially viable by most of the City Council members.

The low bid for demolition does not include material disposal, asbestos testing or other contingencies, which bring the total to about $861,500.
