Pennsylvania considers Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act

The use of medical marijuana as a pain management strategy has a long history of controversial debate, but recent Internet polls show overwhelming public support for legalization.  Backed by the findings of a double-blind clinical trial testing the effectiveness of THC on chronic pain conducted by clinical researcher Dr. Denis Petro, Representative Mark Cohen from Philadelphia introduced House Bill 1393, the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in April of 2009. The bill supports legalization of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania for the purpose of therapeutic pain management of severe and debilitating chronic conditions. Dr. Petro’s study concluded that medical marijuana is a safer and more effective pain management therapy than drugs traditionally proscribed.
