Mississippi middle school shifts students to remove toxic asbestos

Students who attend Aberdeen Middle School in Mississippi are being relocated to other local school facilities while repairs are made to the building. An inspection by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) revealed that there is asbestos in the building. Though the building was not deemed unsafe, the school district is taking precautionary measures, as the repairs may cause damage that could release asbestos particles into the air. Asbestos exposure can lead to asbestosis, mesothelioma and other serious illnesses.

The repairs may take a month, or they could take the rest of the year. Letters were sent home to the parents of students who are affected by this change.
