Asbestos discovered in Hamilton College residence hall
Students living in the Bundy Residence Hall of Hamilton College in New York have recently found out that part of their ceiling is made from asbestos. Most of the areas have been deemed safe for occupancy, but 11 areas are damaged enough to allow small particles of asbestos to seep into the air.
While students are out of the dorm for spring break, the damaged areas will be repaired, with an entire ceiling replacement scheduled to take place over the summer. The residence halls were built in 1970 at a time when asbestos was commonly used in construction materials because of its fireproofing and insulating properties. Now it is widely known that asbestos exposure can cause serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma.
