EPA looks into possible asbestos exposure at Topeka women’s prison

In 2005, a building on the Topeka women’s prison campus was remodeled. Asbestos abatement also took place when the prison was remodeled. Now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating the area because of the asbestos risk posed to the inmates and employees during the remodeling process.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to lung cancer and mesothelioma, and the EPA is acting out concern for inmate and employee safety and health. The Kansas Department of Corrections is working in full cooperation with the EPA to ensure the investigation is completed in a timely manner.
