Stimulus money to clean up abandoned Grand Canyon mines
Areas of the Grand Canyon that were once mined for gold, silver, copper, lead and uranium. Debris and contamination from these mining activities, including asbestos, will be cleaned up soon, thanks to money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Cleaning up the asbestos and sealing off the shafts will keep the area safe for the visitors and hikers who come to Grand Canyon National Park on a daily basis, as well as preserve the area for the wildlife that call it home. The area was chosen to receive stimulus funds because of the high concern for human health and safety.
