Wisconsin roofers claim 40-hour asbestos training no better than 8-hour training

The Vice President of Field Operations for F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Co. Inc based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Greg Johnson, claims that a 40-hour asbestos training course only adds to a bigger bill when compared to a similar 8-hour version of the class. Since June, roofers have been required by the state to attend a 32-hour course, at a cost of $2,750 per worker. As the length of the course and the time required for completion do not actually change how the shingles and roofing are taken care of, Johnson maintains the state doesn’t need to require the lengthier, more expensive course, and instead should revert to the previous requirement.

While the state wants to address concerns, the Department of Health Services, the originators of the rule, do not believe they should send people who have received one day’s worth of training out to take care of asbestos shingles. They believe that because OSHA would not allow such a thing, they cannot allow it. Asbestos handling is strictly regulated by the federal government because of the inherent health risks. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious illnesses.
