Sculptor fighting mesothelioma hopes his last bust will solve missing child mystery

Frank Bender, a terminally ill artist in North Carolina, announced in early February that he had finished his last painting. Bender began the facial reconstruction painting despite his struggle with terminal cancer and a prognosis of only eight months to live when he began. He wanted to make the attempt to create the facial reconstruction of a boy missing for almost 10 years, in the hopes of helping officials identify him.

The facial reconstruction was of a boy whose remains were found in 1998. Detectives had no leads on who the child was and no idea what the child had looked like until Bender created his sculpture. Bender has previously been credited with aiding officials around the world in solving dozens of cases involving murders and disappearances.

Unfortunately, this is probably the last reconstruction Bender will be able to complete. He is currently residing at his home and is under the care of hospice for his mesothelioma.
