Asbestos removal and construction of Spencer Library to be finished by Thanksgiving
The Spencer Public Library in North Carolina should be open by Thanksgiving. During the recent annual planning retreat, participants created a timeline and estimates for the completion of the restoration and construction of the library. Part of the restoration process includes repairing flashing, walls and windows, weatherproofing and removal of lead paint and asbestos. The architect, Bill Burgin, emphasized window repair and restoration to add historical authenticity that may well help in grant assistance.
The goals agreed upon by the aldermen include:
· Stabilize the buildings exterior
· Renovate the first floor interior
· Place the second floor renovations on an indefinite hold
· Obtain estimates for lead abatement for both floors
· Have construction begin by May
· Reopen the first floor of the library only
The aldermen felt that setting a date for the completion of the project was important for accountability purposes. Additionally, the library is important to the people of the community and many members want the library reopened in time for the Hometown Holidays celebrations.
