Historic Mississippi courthouse renovation project is underway

The historic courthouse in Lamar County, Mississippi has begun the $4 million renovation process. In February, the three-story building was inspected before interior demolition and asbestos removal could begin. All items and building materials that can be salvaged and reused are being noted, in an effort to save money. Once all reusable materials and other operational materials have been removed, the asbestos removal will begin.

The removal process should begin in the spring and is expected to take between one and three months to complete. Companies wishing to bid on the asbestos removal will be given access to a survey that was completed to identify the asbestos in the building. While there was no evidence of extensive asbestos in the building, removal is a delicate and lengthy process. Once the asbestos has been removed, interior demolition and construction will begin.
