EPA sets its sights on former weapons manufacturing site

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has targeted a former weapons manufacturing plant in Waterloo, Iowa. The Chamberlain Manufacturing site has been closed for almost two decades and has slowly been picked apart by looters. In 2005, the city took possession of the building after being awarded $350,000 by the EPA to search for contaminants within the building.

Contaminants were indeed found, including groundwater contamination containing chlorinated solvents and extractable hydrocarbons. Lead and heavy metals were also found in sediments. Asbestos in the buildings themselves is also highly likely. The risk of vandalism continues, as does the risk of arson. If the buildings were to burn before the asbestos could be safely removed, the material could be released into the air and surrounding areas. Asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma. The city is anxious to begin demolition, which is projected to cost as much as $1 million.
