Former Wyoming high school gym to be demolished over the summer
The Powell High School gym in Park County, Wyoming will be demolished over the summer. The gymnasium was built in 1949 and was expanded in the early 1970s. The building was later abandoned, and a new school and gym were built after it was determined that structural shortcomings would be too costly to repair. While many in the community wanted to save the building for other uses, their efforts have not been successful.
Before demolition can begin, asbestos must be removed from the roof. Previous asbestos removal had not included the roof, only the asbestos within the building. At the time of the first removal, the fate of the building had not been decided, and removing the asbestos from the roof would have required the removal of the roof. Overall, the board is happy with the current bids, which were far less than the $1 million the district had budgeted.
