More asbestos worries for Philadelphia Housing Authority
The Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) in Pennsylvania has been accused of mishandling asbestos. Specifically, the accusations include removing asbestos insulation from heating and plumbing pipes in an unsafe manner and then improperly disposing of them. Accusations come from residents of renovated homes – including a woman who handled the asbestos-covered pipes left on her front porch with her bare hands – as well as a carpenter and plumber that worked for the PHA.
While visual inspections and air quality tests have not turned up any evidence, officials do admit that these tests and inspections are only accurate for current conditions. As many of the alleged occurrences happened in past months or years, there is no way to know for certain if asbestos was released into the air during the renovations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an investigation to discover more about these claims.
