Mesothelioma patient organizes the South Florida Miles for Meso race
Larry Davis of Pompano Beach, Florida was given a grim prognosis after his 2007 mesothelioma surgery. Mesothelioma is a dangerous form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. None of the options presented by doctors sounded viable to Davis., who decided to forego further treatment. Despite ceasing his chemotherapy and prescribed medications, he eventually felt strong enough to run. Amazingly, he is still running three years later.
On February 14, he participated in his Miles for Meso 5k race at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, Florida. Backed by the Wishing Well Pub and Boca Raton Road Runners, the event was designed to raise money for research as well as public awareness for more effective mesothelioma treatment. Part of that public awareness is recognition that asbestos has not yet been banned in the United States. It was almost banned in 1989 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), but the ban was effectively overturned by a federal court.
