Iron Range mesothelioma study has 1,000 participants so far

Approximately 1,000 Iron Range miners and their spouses have already participated in screenings for the state-funded respiratory health study being conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota. The researchers state that they have half of the respondents they need, and they request that taconite miners and their spouses continue to respond to the recruitment letters that have been sent out. The study is looking into the connection between mining, taconite dust and serious respiratory illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. It will take about 18 months to analyze the results of the respiratory study once they have collected all of the data.
