Asbestos removal would cost $800k for 132-year-old school building
The old Cortland Elementary School in Ohio was purchased at auction last November for $10,000 by an investor who is trying to resell it. The building is 132 years old and contaminated with a large amount of asbestos. Asbestos was commonly used for insulation and fireproofing purposes and is still found in many public and private buildings, especially those built before 1980. If asbestos fibers become airborne, they can be inhaled and cause serious illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Estimates place the cost of demolishing the school building at $1 million – $800,000 of which would cover the cost of asbestos removal, which must be done in an approved manner for safety.
