Former newspaper building getting long-awaited renovations

The Clay County Board of Supervisors in Mississippi bought the former Daily Times Leader building, and the county looks forward to putting it to good use. District 4 needs a new voting precinct to replace the Clay County Courthouse location, but extensive renovations will be required before the building will be ready for the November elections.

The former newspaper building needs a new roof, which will cost about $30,000 to replace. Certified asbestos contractors will also need to be hired to remove asbestos-containing ceiling tiles. The leaky roof caused other problems, including mold growth and rotten walls and carpeting that will cost anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 to repair. There are no structural problems with the building, the oldest parts of which were built between 1885 and 1890.
