Ithaca Gun may get Restore NY grant money for cleanup

The Empire State Development Corp. may vote to allow the city of Ithaca to move $420,000 in Restore NY grant money to subsidize cleanup of the Ithaca Gun site. Ithaca was given $2.3 million in Restore NY grant money to help redevelop the former gun factory and use the property for new high-end condominiums. Cost overruns meant that the $1.46 million that had been earmarked for environmental remediation and demolition didn’t cover the expenses, and work stopped on the project last August. Piles of asbestos-contaminated and lead-contaminated debris have been sitting on the site since then.

The developers had initially asked the state board to transfer the remaining $840,000 for cleanup, but compromised at $420,000. With asbestos and lead cleanup, redevelopment work cannot move forward. The vote was scheduled for the end of January.
