Sinclair fire site tested for asbestos in the air
A fire broke out at the former Sinclair meatpacking plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on December 15, and firefighters battled the blaze for over a week. Air samples were collected from three different locations on December 18 and December 21 to test for asbestos levels, and the tests showed that the concentration was below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) clearance level. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources hired Family Environmental Inc. to conduct the testing, and the samples were analyzed by Reservoirs Environmental Inc. in Denver, Colorado. Demolition crews were called in to aid firefighters in fire suppression, and Linn County Public Health warned people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to stay indoors due to the smoke.
