Proposed New Hampshire day care site is polluted, dangerous
South New Hampshire Services (SNHS) is requesting a variance to open and operate a day care center in Nashua to care for 32 children from ages 2 to 5. The zoning board already denied a similar proposal from SNHS at the same address back in 1998 due to traffic, noise and public safety. Since then, the area has become more populated, adding to traffic volume and public safety issues. Additionally, there is a straight vertical cliff drop at the rear of the site, with the extreme western edge of the property dropping to the Nashua River 60 feet below – creating a serious safety issue for curious children. The area is also polluted by a history of asbestos dumping by a former asbestos manufacturing plant – and the day care site proposal includes plans to create an outdoor playground. Coal used as railroad fuel was also stored at the rear of the site, and the waste smokestack of Nashua Foundries is located about 1,000 feet away from the property. A zoning board hearing was scheduled for January 12 to discuss the day care proposal.
