Mesothelioma claims the life of U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran

James R. Berkley of Iowa City died of mesothelioma complications on January 2 at the age of 60. Berkley was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War. Many Navy veterans, like Berkley, were exposed to asbestos during their military service because it was used for insulation and fireproofing throughout the ships they served on. Mesothelioma is one of many serious illnesses that are caused by asbestos exposure.

Berkley married Lodema Pryor in 1992. He worked as a semi salesman for Truck Country until he retired in 2007. Funeral arrangements were handled by Lensing Funeral Service. His family requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the charity of each friend’s choice.
