Remediation, preservation underway in Indiana arena project
Several historical buildings in Evansville, Indiana are going to be demolished to make way for construction of the new Downtown arena. The Evansville Redevelopment Commission has hired Architectural Renovators of Evansville to remove a tin façade, limestone window sills and other historical features before the structures are demolished. The contractor will receive additional money if it can find any historical features that are worth saving from the interior of the former Libs Candy store. Salvaged features will not be available for sale, but will be stored for future use downtown.
Elite Environmental & Safety Services was hired to perform environmental remediation at the demolition site for $16,456. The contractor will have to remove asbestos, lead paint, pigeon droppings and other contaminants before demolition can take place.
Demolition was expected to begin by the end of January. The $127.5 million arena project should be completed by the end of 2011.
