Hotel demolition project begins after asbestos removal
The former Days Inn motel in Alton, Illinois is getting a makeover that will require demolition of the rear section. The motel building will be losing the restaurant, pool, lobby, banquet room and one and a half guest room wings. Asbestos was removed from the building in December to prepare for the demolition. Once the designated parts of the building are torn down, the concrete floor slabs will be crushed and the debris will be removed. Haden Wrecking Corp. was hired for the demolition work.
Once the debris is removed, construction will begin on an addition, and the motel will open under a new name, possibly as a Best Western. The first phase of construction will cost about $2.5 million to construct the two-story addition, which should be completed over the summer. The second phase of the project will construct a second hotel, a Hampton Inn, behind the original structure. The developer hopes to be able to attract a restaurant to the property at a later date.
