Car crashes keep Indiana library closed longer for renovations
The Gary, Indiana public library system’s Kennedy branch may reopen in March. The library closed back in June 2009 for asbestos abatement, renovations and replacement of the roof. This was the first time the 40-year-old library had ever undergone any renovations. The original renovation schedule was interrupted by two vehicles that crashed into the library building in November and December. In addition to the extra time it will take to complete the repairs from the car crashes, it will also cost more money. Before the December crash, repair and renovation costs were approximately $400,000. After the crash damaged a wall, a large stone planter and granite benches, the bill will be substantially higher.
