Newly renovated Minnesota church dedicated on January 24

St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester, Minnesota recently completed a $2 million renovation project that had begun in the spring of 2008, holding their first mass in the newly finished space on Christmas Eve. The congregation had been meeting in the St. Pius X school gymnasium while the church was closed for renovations.

The church’s sanctuary was gutted and put back together. A new skylight was installed, restroom facilities were improved, a new heating and cooling system was installed, electrical wiring was updated, new sprinkler systems were installed and toxic asbestos was removed from the building. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that was widely used in construction materials.  Asbestos exposure can cause serious illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

The new sanctuary was dedicated in a special ceremony on January 24, as this marks the first renovation since the church opened in 1964. For their next project, the church plans to raise $35,000 for a new organ and speakers.
