School auditorium reopens after renovations

Harry Simon Auditorium at the Onteora Central School District Middle/High School in New York reopened on January 13 after a major $1.1 million overhaul. The school district kicked off a concert series to celebrate the renovation and reopening of the auditorium, and alumni from the past 40 years returned for the celebration.

The auditorium was in a state of poor repair that was underlined last year when a student passed out on stage during an assembly due to heat and lack of airflow. The stage rigging had been removed in 2005 after it was declared unsafe, making it impossible to hang scenery for theatrical productions. Asbestos was discovered during the renovation process, requiring $20,000 in asbestos abatement from a qualified contractor.

The renovations included a new energy-efficient heating and cooling system, state-of-the-art acoustical treatment, new house lights, new sound and lighting control panels, new rigging, winches, front and side curtains, more comfortable seating with wheelchair accessible accommodations, and coordinated painting and carpeting.
