Harvard church is ready to expand

Congregational Church of Harvard in Massachusetts, which was founded in 1821, is about to get a little bit bigger. Renovation and expansion of the building has been in the works for about 10 years, and the work is finally about to begin. The roof of the classroom building is going to be torn off and replaced to make room for a full second floor and a 24×34-foot addition.

Asbestos abatement is currently taking place in the classroom building, so it will remain closed to the public until the project is done. The church’s Sunday services are being held at Harvard Elementary School because the sanctuary does not have access to its required second exit.

The renovation project will cost about $1.5 million – one-third of which has already been raised by the church. The stewardship committee hopes to raise the rest of the money through donations or by selling naming rights to rooms within the expanded building. Donations are tax deductible.
