One quarter of the asbestos already gone from Midtown Plaza
The Midtown Plaza asbestos removal project in Rochester, New York is well underway. Approximately 25% of the asbestos is gone now, according to a state official who toured parts of the complex on December 17 with city officials and members of the media. The former Top of the Plaza restaurant has been gutted and will be ready for redevelopment after its windows are removed, since they contain asbestos in the caulking. Empire State Development Corp. is overseeing the demolition; between 50,000 and 60,000 cubic yards of demolition debris have already been removed.
Work crews must remove any furniture or other movable items left behind in the building first. After that, they remove mechanical equipment, walls and flooring that don’t contain asbestos; it costs less to dispose of asbestos-free materials, and some of it can be sold for scrap. When the area is contained, the asbestos can then be removed. Paradigm Environmental Services is monitoring the air quality throughout the project.
