Georgia home renovations unexpectedly turn into demolition project
Vine and Barbara Dooley of Five Points, Georgia began remodeling their home during the fall. They didn’t expect to have to demolish half of their home and start living in the pool house until it could be rebuilt.
The Dooleys’ home was built in the 1950s, a time when asbestos was widely used in both insulation and fireproofing materials. The toxic substance is known to cause cancer, and it has to be removed in compliance with strict environmental regulations. The house was also contaminated with mold. Remediating both the mold and asbestos contamination meant that it would be less expensive to tear down part of the house and rebuild than it would be to renovate it.
The middle section of the main house is completely gone, and the Dooleys will remain in the pool house until rebuilding work finishes up next spring.
