Asbestos cleanup at Cleveland State University could take two years

Cleveland State University (CSU) in Ohio has work crews removing asbestos from the 19th floor of Rhodes Tower. Approximately 40 staff and faculty members from the treasury services department have had their offices relocated to other buildings while the work is being done, and it could be two years before they are able to move back.

Crews were working on a waterproofing project on the roof of the building in September when pieces of ceiling tile were dislodged, exposing asbestos that had been hidden in the ceiling. The area is now sealed off with plastic sheeting, and there is a sign that says, “Please excuse our appearance while we are remodeling.” The 19th floor ventilation system has been isolated from the rest of Rhodes Tower.

Officials at CSU were aware of the asbestos contamination in Rhodes Tower, and the university has been progressively renovating individual floors to remove the toxic substance. Asbestos abatement costs approximately $400,000 to $700,000 per floor.
