Old Pennsylvania children’s hospital to be demolished

The old Children’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pennsylvania is about to be demolished. The demolition will begin in January and should take approximately one year to complete. The oldest parts of the complex will be coming down.  Children’s Hospital moved to Lawrenceville last May.

The first part of the demolition project calls for asbestos removal, which could take approximately four months. Many older buildings like the hospital complex used asbestos for insulation and fireproofing, but the toxic substance is known to cause certain types of cancer like mesothelioma, so it must be removed by certified asbestos contractors. After the asbestos is gone, demolition should take about seven months to complete. After the debris is crushed and used for fill or otherwise disposed of, the area will be landscaped until UPMC comes up with a new plan for the site.
