Mold and asbestos force Ocala City Council to make temporary move
Ocala City Hall in Florida closed in mid-December due to asbestos and mold in the duct work. The City Council has had to relocate from their chambers until March while remediation work is underway. Mold was discovered in the air conditioning duct work after people complained about odors in the council chambers. The air conditioning system is separate from other locations in the building, so only the chambers and the second floor hallway are affected by the problem. A temporary wall was erected to isolate the problem areas so as not to affect the city manager’s office.
The asbestos was discovered in the material that taped the duct work together. The environmental survey by PBO3 cost $2,782. The ceiling duct work with the asbestos was removed by Sunrise Environmental for $9,844. Installation of the new air handler and duct work will cost $46,600, and the work cannot proceed until the parts can be obtained. After that work is completed, it will cost $13,000 to install a new ceiling and carpeting.
